INDIANAPOLIS – Rashaan Melvin is the boxer who hits the canvas nine times and bounces up 10. He’s the no-talk, all-walk, strictly business, bottom-of-the-roster grinder the NFL can’t get rid of, no matter how many times it tries.

He’s the name play-by-play announcers have to look up, the week-in, week-out starter fans forget, the dogged pro who’s earned his teammates respect and his coach’s trust.

Football was supposed to kick Rashaan Melvin out a long time ago. He walked on at Northern Illinois and got his scholarship the old-fashioned way. He worked. He waited two years. He earned it. Good thing, too. Life wasn’t about to get any easier in the NFL.

“I just love the journey,” Melvin said Sunday, smiling.
