Ahead of Monday night’s game between the Detroit Lions and New York Giants, Free Press sports writer Dave Birkett looks at the biggest factor for each team to win, and highlights the game’s key matchup.
The Lions will win if … Theo Riddick has 75 or more yards receiving. The Lions won’t face a better defense all year than the one they’ll see Monday night. The Giants have good pass rushers in Jason Pierre-Paul and Olivier Vernon, solid cornerbacks in Janoris Jenkins and Eli Apple and one of the best safeties in the game in Landon Collins. That means Matthew Stafford won’t have many opportunities to go downfield. What he will have, however, is Riddick mismatched against a below-average linebacking corps. Riddick missed the Giants game last year with wrist injuries, but he’s the type of backfield weapon who could thrive Monday.
The Giants will win if … they keep Eli Manning upright. The Giants might have the worst offensive line in the NFL with turnstile tackles Ereck Flowers and Bobby Hart, and the aging John Jerry at right guard.
