Only three Buffalo Bills coaches have won their first game as the team’s head coach; Marv Levy in 1986, Rex Ryan in 2015, and Sean McDermott in 2017. This Sunday, McDermott looks to become the first Bills coach to win his opening two games with the team.
In 1986, Levy assumed command halfway through a dismal season. Buffalo was 2-7 and a mess. After a 16-12 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, Levy’s team dropped their second game 34-24. A few weeks later, they beat the Kansas City Chiefs 17-14 for his second win. He finished that first year 2-5. Jim Kelly eventually arrived along with a lot more Hall of Fame talent and the rest is history.
For Ryan, Buffalo won opening day 27-14, beating an Indianapolis Colts team that had just gone to the AFC Championship eight months earlier before welcoming the New England Patriots. A hard-fought game ended 40-32 after a furious three-touchdown rally in the fourth quarter. Buffalo won their next game, beating the Miami Dolphins 41-14 to give Ryan his second win in red, white, and blue before finishing the season 8-8.
