New England Patriots WR Brandin Cooks downplays return to New Orleans – New England Patriots News

New England Patriots wide receiver Brandin Cooks said he’s more focused on helping the team erase the “nasty” loss last week than facing his former team.

The former Oregon State star and the Patriots will face the New Orleans Saints Sunday. Cooks spent his first three seasons with the Saints and downplayed his return.

“I just look at it as another game. I feel like when you start to get hyped up too much, you psyche yourself out,” Cooks told reporters Wednesday. “So I’m just really looking forward to Week 2 and playing some football.”

Cooks was the Saints first-round pick (No. 20) in the 2014 NFL draft. Following a slow start in 2014, Cooks caught a combined 162 passes for 2,311 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2015 and 2016. 

Cooks was frustrated with his role in the Saints offense in 2016. He complained that “closed mouths don’t get fed” after he wasn’t targeted during the Saints win against the Los Angeles Rams in December. Cooks and Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas seemed to engage in war of words on Twitter when word got out that the Saints were attempting to trade Cooks.

Cooks said he left the Saints and coach Sean Payton on good terms.

“We ended on a great note. I love him. He did me well when I was there. There’s no bad blood at all,” Cooks told reporters. “I loved every bit of playing there. They gave me an opportunity, first team coming into the NFL. You have to respect that, and respect the owners, [general manager] Mickey [Loomis], Sean for believing in me, and there’s a lot of great memories made.”
