PHILADELPHIA — Remember the buzz surrounding Paul Turner last summer?
If you’re an Eagles fan, it’s hard to forget. Turner entered training camp as an undrafted afterthought, an undersized wide receiver facing a steep uphill battle to claw his way anywhere near the 53-man roster.
And by the final week of the preseason, Turner captivated Philadelphia. He led all NFL players in receptions in exhibition games, returned a punt for a touchdown and caught the attention of fans across the region, many of whom rejoiced when the Louisiana Tech product earned a promotion to the active roster late in the regular season.
So, who will be this year’s Paul Turner?
The Eagles won’t always have a clear-cut preseason fan favorite rise from the ranks of the undrafted, but it’s fun to consider some options. After watching the first week of training camp, I figured I’d rank a few of the players who fit the Turner mold and could steal the hearts of the always passionate Philadelphia fan base.
Here’s the criteria for this exercise:
1) The players must be undrafted and have no NFL game experience (they can be rookies or training camp veterans who haven’t yet made a regular-season appearance).
2) We’ll rank players based on their potential to impress on the field and earn admiration from fans.
All right, let’s get to it.
