July 31 (UPI) — The Jacksonville Jaguars have agreed to a deal with second year cornerback Charles Gaines.
Jacksonville announced the signing Monday morning. The Jaguars waived/injured first-year CB Taurean Nixon, to make room on the roster for Gaines. If Nixon clears waivers Tuesday, he will join the team’s reserve/injured list.
Gaines, 24, was picked in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. He made 15 tackles, had two passes defended and one forced fumble in six games during his rookie campaign. He started four games in 2016. The Browns cut Gaines in September, before he signed with the Buffalo Bills‘ practice squad in December. He spent this offseason with the Bills, before being waived in May.
Jacksonville enters the season stacked at cornerback, following the acquisition of free agent A.J. Bouye and the presence second-year defender Jalen Ramsey. Jacksonville had the fifth-best pass defense in the NFL last season, allowing 215.2 yards per game.
Nixon, 26, was a seventh round pick by the Denver Broncos in the 2015 NFL Draft. He spent time on the Broncos’ practice squad and was promoted to the active roster in January of 2016. He had one tackle in two appearances that season. Denver waived Nixon in September.
The Jaguars have 90 players on their active roster.
