FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — One would think R.C. Buford had it all figured out.
The San Antonio Spurs general manager has won five NBA titles and has twice been named the league’s executive of the year. But that hasn’t stopped Buford from pulling from other resources to help maintain a championship-caliber franchise.
That includes picking the brains of friends Thomas Dimitroff and Dan Quinn, the general manager and head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, respectively. Buford was a guest on Day 2 of training camp and said it was time well spent.
“It’s really fun to watch Dan and Thomas build their team and to see the energy that they show,” Buford told ESPN. “And then to see the passion of the players; it’s an impressive operation.”
Buford strolled the sideline next to Dimitroff and had lunch with the Falcons GM afterward. Brooklyn Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson, formerly an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks, also was a guest.
“You can learn a lot,” Buford said of watching the Falcons. “I think the synergy built amongst the team, the focus on the ‘team’ is really impressive. I learned a couple different things between Thomas and (assistant general manager) Scott Pioli. You always take away something when you get the opportunity to observe well-run organizations.”
Buford met Dimitroff at a conference years ago and has developed a tight bond with both Dimitroff and Quinn. He even attended Falcons games in Atlanta and Tampa last season.
