NAPA — The Raiders opened training camp Saturday with six new absences and some of the big-name variety.
Linebacker Bruce Irvin and defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. were both placed on the non-football injury list while first-round pick Gareon Conley was one of three placed on the physically unable to perform list.
Defensive lineman Jihad Ward and offensive lineman Jon Feliciano were also put on the PUP list while left tackle Donald Penn is on the reserve/did not report list.
These six are in addition to linebacker Ben Heeney and tight end Cooper Helmet, who were placed on the NFL list earlier this week.
Penn doesn’t count against the 90-man roster so the Raiders are currently at 88 players.
Edwards and Feliciano, who suffered a knee injury during organized team activities, were both working out on a side field as players took the field. Irvin later came out wearing his jersey to watch a portion of the practice. Ward, who had foot surgery in the off-season, was seen working out in the weight room. It’s unclear what injuries Edwards, Irvin or Conley are dealing with although Conley, who signed his rookie deal on Friday night, did miss time during the team’s mandatory mini-camp.
Feliciano, who is the team’s backup center and a backup guard, is the only one of the players designated Saturday who isn’t a returning starter or someone expected to have a major role.
