Parkey’s background >> Two days before the Browns were scheduled to play the Dolphins on Sept. 25, 2016, kicker Patrick Murray suffered a knee injury in practice. There was concern in the Browns front office, but not panic, because like every team the Browns had their list of emergency replacements at their fingertips.
The Browns could have signed veteran out-of-work kicker Robbie Gould, who lost his job to Connor Barth after 11 seasons with the Bears. It seemed a perfect fit because Browns special teams coordinator Chris Tabor was an assistant with the Bears during Gould’s prime years with Chicago. Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown signed Cody Parkey instead.
Parkey, originally signed by the Colts on May 11, 2014, as an undrafted rookie, was traded to Philadelphia on Aug. 20 of the same year. He had a Pro Bowl season with the Eagles in 2014, making 32 of 36 field-goal attempts. He suffered a groin injury in the third game of 2015 and lost his job to Caleb Sturgis.
Such is the life of a kicker. An injury cost Parkey his job with the Eagles, and an injury to Murray led to Parkey getting a job with the Browns.
