The Philadelphia Eagle seem to be on the right track for a rebuild from the Chip Kelly nightmare. They have seem to found their quarterback of the future, have seemed to build a respectable defense, and have answered their biggest question marks from last years roster. Here are three reasons why the Philadelphia Eagles could compete for a Super Bowl sooner than expected.
Many people remember Schwartz for his time with the Detroit Lions and his infamous handshake scuffle with Jim Harbaugh, but Schwartz has quietly been one of the leagues best defensive coordinators the past couple years. Schwartz was successful in a one-year stint in Buffalo leading them to the number two overall defense DVOA from football outsiders.
Schwartz came over in 2016 to coach the defense and took the Eagles defense from number seventeen to number four on football outsiders DVOA list. DVOA ratings represent the value the defense has for the team. Schwartz’s wide-9 set allowed for Brandon Graham to have a break out year on the defensive line as a pass rusher, and for Jordan Hicks emerge as one of the best coverage linebackers.
Schwartz did not receive any big name free agents to work with, but Derek Barnett, and Chris Long give the Eagles a deep defensive line rotation, and could allow for a four defensive end set such as the “NASCAR” set the Giants sometimes run on passing downs. If Schwartz is able to succeed with the Eagles young secondary, Schwartz should be in line for another shot at a head coaching job.
