Panthers unexpectedly fire Ex-Giants exec Dave Gettleman – New York Giants News

A wild calendar year for the Carolina Panthers became even more wild on Monday when the team announced the unexpected and surprising termination of general manager Dave Gettleman.

“After much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations, I have decided to relieve Dave Gettleman of his duties as general manager,” Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said. “I want to thank Dave for the role he played in our success over the past four seasons. While the timing of this decision is not ideal, a change is needed.”

Gettleman was hired by the Panthers in 2013 after he spent 14 years with the New York Giants, where he served as a scout (1998), pro personnel director (1999-2011) and senior pro personnel analyst (2012). Prior to that, he had also worked with the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos.

In four years as Panthers general manager, Gettleman reached the playoffs three times, including a trip to the Super Bowl in 2015. Carolina finished with a 15-1 record that season.

Following the announcement of Gettleman’s termination, the NFL world reacted with shock and, in some cases, lingering bitterness.
