Giants 90-Man Roster: TE Colin Thompson More Than An Afterthought? – New York Giants News

The competition for roster spots and playing time at tight end will be one of the fascinating things to watch during training camp for the New York Giants. We always discuss the five players we believe to be in line for spots. There are, though, six tight ends on the current roster.

The sixth is undrafted free agent Colin Thompson. Does the former Temple Owl have any chance of sticking around? Let’s take a closer look as we continue our player-by-player profiles of the Giants’ 90-man roster.

2016 Season In Review

Thompson caught only three passes for 43 yards in 11 games last season. Over three seasons with Temple Thompson caught only 19 passes in 29 games. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Thompson is considered a pure blocking tight end.

2017 Season Outlook

We have spent a lot of time talking about the competition for roster spots at tight end for the Giants. In that time, Thompson hasn’t really been a consideration. With first-round pick Evan Engram, free agent Rhett Ellison and the currently healthy Matt LaCosse joining holdovers Will Tye and Jerell Adams, the position is crowded.

Can Thompson muscle his way into the picture? It is hard to see how right now. If, however, Ellison’s calf injury lingers and LaCosse again doesn’t make it to the start of the season healthy, that might change.

The Giants have plenty of guys to throw to. They are still looking for guys who can help their blocking. If nothing else, perhaps Thompson is a solid practice squad candidate.
