DeShone Kizer gains ground on Cody Kessler in Browns quarterback competition: Mary Kay Cabot – Cleveland Browns News

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Browns rookie DeShone Kizer has considerably narrowed the gap on Cody Kessler in the quarterback competition and will press him hard for the starting job in training camp.

The No. 52 overall pick out of Notre Dame, Kizer started out third in the quarterback rotation behind Kessler and Brock Osweiler, but showed coach Hue Jackson enough warrant the No. 1 spot on the second day of minicamp.

Kizer responded with a number of impressive plays, including a laser shot to a leaping David Njoku in the end zone and a completion to Seth DeValve over the middle on a third down. He made his share of rookie mistakes, including a swipe over the middle by Ibraheim Campbell, but those are to be expected in minicamp.

Granted, Kizer was back to No. 3 by the final day of minicamp, but he continued to take all of his reps with first-teamers, meaning he’s essentially been splitting the starting reps with Kessler, the man to beat in the race. Osweiler, on the other hand, took most of his reps with second-teamers, and Kevin Hogan went fourth with the third- and fourth-teamers.

“We already have some capable guys here in Brock and Cody, and we want to see if (Kizer) can compete with those guys,” Jackson said during minicamp last week. “Obviously, there are some things he does really well, and there are some things where he’s still a young quarterback. He’s still learning, but he’s emerging. I do believe that. We’ll see how this all unfolds.”
