DallasCowboys.com writer and former NFL personnel man Bryan Broaddus joined the Shan & RJ show on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM] recently to talk about Cowboys minicamp. Here are some of the highlights:
On where Dak needs to improve
Dak has to make those throws from the middle of the pocket. This is something they really want to improve on. The Giants did a nice job of keeping him in the pocket last year and he just didn’t handle it very well. Those are the two defeats he had. So they figured out that hey, we’ve got to become a better pocket-passing team here with Dak. He’s worked hard to stand in the middle and make those throws. You have to be encouraged the last couple days when Dez is running those 10, 11-yard in cuts and making those defenders have to go through him to get the ball.
When Dak’s been bad in these practices, the balls have been high.
On receiver Brice Butler’s impressive minicamp
The way Brice Butler has practiced through these OTAs and minicamps is he’s really letting everybody know he’s going to fight for this spot. He’s just not going to roll over and let someone take it from him. The emergence of Noah Brown was nice but Brice Butler has made several plays. In fact the play he made [one day at minicamp] was a great slant route that he was able to work in between the linebacker and the corner and then, boom, Kellen Moore with a good throw, he makes the reception, getting up the field beating the safety.
Brice Butler’s not going to go away. It just depends on if they keep five or six … Lucky Whitehead, Noah Brown, Andy Jones? One of these guys is going to have to step up [to make the active roster]….
