The New Orleans Saints are embracing a photoshopped image showing support for U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, who was shot last week at a Republican congressional baseball practice.
While the congressman continues his recovery in Washington, D.C., groups and individuals in southeast Louisiana and New Orleans are showing support in several different ways.
One image of support showed up Monday when the Saints shared a photo on Twitter of their training facility with the words “Scalise Strong.”
Greg Bensel, senior vice president of communications and broadcasting for the Saints and New Orleans Pelicans, said on Twitter that he posted the image because he wanted to show support for Scalise and all those who were injured or affected by Wednesday’s shooting, regardless of politics.
Scalise has had several surgeries since Wednesday’s shooting in Alexandria, Virginia. He arrived at a hospital in critical condition and in what doctors described as imminent risk of death.
Doctor described Friday how a bullet from an assault weapon entered Scalise’s hip and traversed his pelvis, shattering blood vessels, bones and internal organs along the way. MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in an update over the weekend that the third-ranking GOP leader in the House continues to show signs of improvement.
