This is an ongoing series breaking down key players on the Dallas Cowboys’ roster.
Position: Left guard/right tackle
Size: 6-4, 321
Age when season starts: 24
Drafted: Undrafted in 2015
Experience: Entering his third season
Contract status: Signed through 2017
2016 recap: Collins’ second season in the NFL was cut short after he tore a ligament in his right, big toe in Week 3 against Chicago. Collins underwent surgery and was placed on injured reserve, missing the rest of the season.
Collins won the starting left guard spot over Ron Leary after the first month of his rookie season in 2015. He came into last season as the team’s starting left guard before the injury led to Leary starting the rest of the way.
Collins was a first-round talent in 2015 but went undrafted because he was scheduled to talk to the police in New Orleans about the shooting death of a pregnant woman with whom he had a relationship, although he wasn’t considered a suspect in the crime.
2017 outlook: Veteran starting right tackle Doug Free retired this offseason, creating a hole along the offensive line.
Collins has spent all offseason practicing at right tackle and is expected to start there when the season kicks off in September.
This is a big opportunity for Collins, who will be a restricted free agent after the season. If he plays well at right tackle, Collins could be in line for a big contract extension soon.
