TJ Watt: The next great Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker? – Pittsburgh Steelers News

Rookie linebacker T.J. Watt is under a lot of pressure to succeed for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Watchful eyes will be looking to see if Watt’s breakout junior season at Wisconsin, his second season playing on the defensive side of the ball, which garnered him All-American honors is the level of play that can be expected or was a fluke. He is under added pressure being a linebacker selected in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Historically, such players have gone on to have great success with the franchise. Recently, Lawrence Timmons and Ryan Shazier have performed up to the standards expected of a linebacker selected in the first round by the Steelers while Jarvis Jones, a player with more hype than Shazier coming out of college, crumbled under the pressure and is no longer with the team. Additionally, Watt is under pressure merely for sharing the same last name with one of the most dominant players in the NFL. T.J. will want to prove himself individually so he is not remembered only as J.J.’s younger brother.

But there is evidence that T.J. Watt has all the tools to overcome that pressure. The Steelers were very high on him, taking the projected second round pick with the 30st overall selection in the NFL Draft. Watt has the motor and drive that excites the Steelers coaching staff and he seems to fit the mold of a typical Steeler, one who puts his head down and lets his play on the field do most of the talking.
